Wasn't sure I was going to do a review on this one, figured I might watch it in the 1h37m that it runs. Well, six minutes in, I want to start writing.
I've watched Joker, The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy, and The Purge: Election Year recently. Tonight I'm watching The First Purge while I stay up and guard the house; volume low, with captions on.
Previous reviews/research:
Joker: https://voat.co/v/QRV/3850029
The first Purge movie: https://voat.co/v/QRV/3853298
The Purge: Anarchy: https://voat.co/v/QRV/3854647
The Purge: Election Year: https://voat.co/v/QRV/3858978
Like the last two, it starts with weird images and "BH Productions" which reminds me of "BH Kids".
Interviewing people who are angry. Family lives in the location The Purge will be, so are also interviewed; $5,000 to remain home, and possibly more "if you participate beyond that." "Go out, release your anger."
Seems like similar instructions have been given to Antifa et al.
Newscaster: "Despite the weather conditions, the protesters are out. They have their signs and their fists are raised. They are against the Purge experiment that is happening." So: there's a storm, and protesters, and murder on the horizon. Just said a prayer of protection for our President, as there's a crowd gathering in DC and they've sent the National Guard away.
So, this hot blonde chick came up with the idea for the Purge. kek! Going all-out, are they? The "white power" (which was on their uniforms, last movie); the idea that women should work, and that they can come up with super murderous ideas instead of caring for their offspring. Like all those superhero movies showing 110-pound women beating up 220-pound men. Just not how it works, as some members of Antifa are being shown lately.
And of course, there's someone jumping in and screaming, but it's the reluctant drug-dealing teenager's friend, the first one interviewed who wanted to hurt people.
At drug dealer's meeting saying "be cool", a guy says "Come on, my G! This is bullshit! I wanna fucking purge, man! For the first time in my life, I could be a law-abiding citizen!" Funny, as that's a movie Q referenced (Law Abiding Citizen), which the wife and I watched a few months ago. That one, she could handle. :)
17m The mom goes to confront the drug dealer after her son's neck was slashed, he says "My office", then the next scene in his office has a large picture of a portion of a dollar bill -- "Hello, George!" Also, there are lots of Benjamins folded and rubber-banded, reminding me of Dark Side of the Moon's "the paper holds their folded faces to the floor".
"$5,000? To stay? That's life-changing for us!" Uh, yeah, that sounds like foreshadowing. :)
The sound of the beginning of the alert is of course exactly like the Emergency Alert System that I remember hearing tests of growing up, watching one of the three channels available; except in this case, it starts with "This is not a test." And, actually, they do say "Emergency Broadcast System" during the alert.
Crazy dude (Skeletor, how original) made "Wolverine-claw-syringes" which reminds me of the ending of Limitless; wonder how they will be used.
Everybody's eyes are glowing a different color, from the contacts they put in to record their crimes. There are also drones following them around, and from the HUD in the drone's view, they appear to be armed.
30m17 Reporter has "Anne" on to talk about the scene -- she looks quite a lot like General Flynn's attorney, Sydney Powell! I'm sure that's no accident.
The mom's drinking friend who stole from the pastor's stash is named Dolores, which seems like a Seinfeld reference.
As young punk is walking downtown, he passes a boarded-up business, the board being painted with "BLACK OWNED" which we've seen in the last week of riots.
The church's sign said "Pray not purge, Galatians 5:16", which is (and 17 and 18; KJV): "16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law."
Skeletor starts stabbing people at a "Purge block party", then confronts Isaiah (the young reluctant drug dealer -- who of course, has a Biblical name), who doesn't shoot his nemesis but has the gun knocked out of his hands, and runs.
News: "At this point we've seen looting and vandalism, with only a few instances of real violence across the island."
Nya (the mom -- actually, sister) gets her foot in a snare (one of the two episodes of Little House we watched tonight involved a snare), and is then pulled towards a sewer opening, and a guy pops out with a baby doll on his head which was crying (to attract people to the snare I guess?), and -- get this -- starts grabbing her crotch!!! You can't make this shit up! Too funny, they are actually putting their projection of crimes against women into this film! And, just to make sure you got the reference, after she sprays him with pepper spray and as she's running away she yells, "Pussy-grabbing motherfucker!"
Just so they're clear. Kek!!!
Nya picks up Isaiah, and they're walking to the church and a guy in "white bloc" (like Antifa's "black bloc" but white clothing) jumps out, menaces them without words, and then starts pulling the trigger of the gun he's holding at them -- squirting them with something, then cackles and runs off. I guess an HRC reference?
53m News: "Some of the people participating in violence have been seen wearing masks and disguises. The whole world is watching and wondering, what will unfold on Staten Island streets tonight?" We had a week of rioting, with similar question.
D and his employee driving, distracted by two people fucking against the hood of a car, and a flaming bus slams into their side. There was a flaming bus seen in an earlier one of these movies.
In the "Purge HQ", grunts says "Participation levels increasing. Increasing violence on various screens. Purgers everywhere, especially in low-income areas." How sad! And, exactly the way it's playing out, on our streets.
D and crew run into "mercs", "like Blackwater, back in the day" -- wow, our overseas crimes are now "back in the day"! I lived through them. Doesn't seem so long ago to me. But, and we're about 2/3 of the way in so it's time for the twist, we're likely about to learn that they were sent in to do more damage. Rioters, sent in among protesters, sounds familiar.
Blonde lady figures out thugs were sent in, says "I want all of this on a flash drive" -- reminiscent of Iron Man (first).
Guy busts in and she confronts him; he says, "But they're not soldiers. They're mercenaries, from all over." [[[They]]] were accusing President Trump of wanting to send the military onto our streets! Turns out he's smarter than that, and is using federal agents instead. That is yet to play out but seems to be imminent.
Then he says, "This country is too overpopulated, doctor, there's too much crime, too much unemployment" -- straight out of Malthus, and the Georgia Guidestones wanting a maximum of 500 million people in Earth.
"People want us to raise taxes? Our debt has tripled, we can't pay for anything" -- we just spent trillions and are about to spend trillions more! Of course, this debt will be wiped away when we "declare bankruptcy", which our President has some experience with, kek!
He goes on: "We, the NFFA? We inherited all this mess." Again, reflecting VSG GEOTUS President Trump's recent wording, about having inherited an empty cupboard from the previous administration.
A group of people dressed as police are approaching a man crawling on a baseball field; as it zooms out, lots of dead bodies on the field already. There was an incident a couple days ago where "men dressed as police" in a town which had a curfew that said "must be on property, don't have to be indoors" went down a street, told people to get indoors then "light 'em up boys!" and fired paintballs at everyone who was still outside. Most likely "not police", although in the movie's instance, who knows?
Spanish mom talking to Nya: "I look at her (daughter) and I think about this night. What they're doing to us. What they're doing to this country. I'm worried about this country. I'm worried about our future, you know?" -- as are we all, sister, as are we all!
