They don't think it's a substitute for their personality. It's a means of improving themselves aesthetically. It's natural to want to be attractive to the opposite sex, people seek it in different forms. Some people work out and diet to look better aesthetically, some people get nice hair cuts, most people take care of their hygiene, and some people get tattoos. It's an expression. The way you're reacting to ink is fairly reflective of your own personality. Relax

means of improving themselves aesthetically

They're for people with no self-esteem because they have no accomplishments worthy of pride in their life. They could improve their appearance (and their overall life) with diet and exercise. They could improve their appearance with disciplined hygiene and grooming. They could improve their appearance with a decent job to afford well fitting and tasteful clothing.

But tattoos are a shortcut for the lazy and pathetic of the world. People who have no reason to be proud of themselves get them because it's the only thing about them they can be proud of - even if it's just something they spent money to acquire. Getting tattoos warrants no more pride than would possessing a material object.

Tattoos are for the pathetic who barely recognize how pathetic they are and try (and fail) to seek a reprieve from being pathetic through acquiring ink.
