People can rightfully take pride in what deeds they have accomplished, a masterpiece of creativity they created, an enduring structure or institution they have built, a skill they've mastered, a human being they've educated and developed from birth.

Some mediocre and lesser people, unable to find pride in their accomplishments, try to take pride in the things they own. Hollow materialism in essence. It drives the consumerist society, sadly its a widespread phenomenon.

There are some people who realize that materialism, or taking pride in a possession, is fleeting and weak. They have a natural urge to find pride within themselves. So they mistakenly think that taking pride in a tattoo will improve their self esteem - that it will give them a reason to feel pride in themselves. Many of these people, while just aware enough to realize taking pride in one's material possessions is fleeting and hollow, still delude themselves into thinking tattoos are a part of them and not just something they paid to acquire, just like any other possession.

And so I feel safe to agree withOP, at least in a general sense, as I estimate 90% or more of people with tattoos are compensating for never having accomplished anything worthy of pride in their lifetime.

Go ahead, post your anecdotes about individual tattooed people who have accomplished something noteworthy. There's your 10%.

Nice post except that it has nothing to do with tattoos. Being a stupid unoriginal loser who thinks injecting dye into their skin can be a substitute for developing a personality is not an accomplishment.
