There's only a handful of things that we actually NEED. If we let our technology progress in the right direction in the first place, we could have been virtually free of those needs a long time ago. I can use hemp oil refined from hemp seeds to make ethanol to power lamps and even cars. The ethanol combustion process doesn't leave behind dirty carbons. You can use hemp fibers to create a frame for a car too. Basically, a whole industry could be changed permanently if we paid attention and followed good science. However, convenience came before it, along with many other special interests.
If you have some time, look up Henry Ford's cannabis car. He created a car with a stronger frame than most conventional plastics, less waste produced in the process, and it could run cleaner than anything. Our dependence on the rest of the world is a farce. When we let go of holding on to them completely, I guarantee we will make more discoveries to benefit us than ever before.

It's a hell of a lot grayer than the black and white picture the US textbooks print. It's telling that US textbooks begin to cover the subject from Pearl Harbor, Lend Lease and D-Day and not from the German perspective, we basically get "Germany had too much debt so they invaded Poland and started the second world war.
