It's easy to tell people to "learn to think for yourself", but if someone can't think for themselves, how will they be able to teach this skill to themselves? Is it simply a choice to think for yourself, or is there a learned skill involved?
Turns out there's a learned skill involved, and it doesn't come naturally to anyone. You don't automatically know how to think critically and then simply get lazy and decide not to. That's not how the mind works.
So if you want to think for yourself - or improve your thinking skills - then here are some links that you may find useful.
Beginners, start here with the basics of Critical Thinking: https://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/critical-thinking-where-to-begin/796
There's lots more to explore on criticalthinking.org, so be sure to check it all out as you are able.
Here is a helpful list of cognitive biases: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases
This is an absolutely fascinating free e-book from the CIA about how the mind works and how to use that in intelligence analysis: https://www.cia.gov/library/center-for-the-study-of-intelligence/csi-publications/books-and-monographs/psychology-of-intelligence-analysis/PsychofIntelNew.pdf
Finally, when you REALLY want to turn your mind into a well-oiled critical thinking machine capable of superhuman feats of rational thinking, consider studying up on symbolic/propositional logic:
Start here: https://courses.umass.edu/phil110-gmh/text/c01_3-99.pdf
Then maybe here: https://www.maa.org/sites/default/files/images/upload_library/46/Pengelley_projects/symbolic_logic_final.pdf
Possibly also here: https://philosophy.lander.edu/logic/symbolic.html
If you study critical thinking and logic, you will literally FEEL yourself getting smarter.
For those of you who hate reading, maybe you can find some helpful videos somewhere online. If anyone finds a good one, please include below.

Why not getting started by reading Kant's definition of 'Aufklärung'/'Enlightenment'(!)? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapere_aude) Sapere aude!

Ha! Kant as a starting point? That's hilarious! "So wait...noumena?"

Well, maybe not starting with the whole Kant... ;) But I think that one fits quite well: (https://bdfwia.github.io/bdfwia.html)

Critically thinking is necessary, as well as knowing when to stop thinking and listen to knowledge that is from beyond the limited mind. And even then, that dimensional knowledge needs to be assimilated with critical thinking/feeling.

Honestly, this should be stickied. So many here and still easily swayed, even by the good guys. Critical thought should be used at ALL times, even when its Qanon dishing out the info. Trust but verify...

This is an awesome post and will be useful for many. But I'm not convinced thinking for yourself isn't natural. Our brains have been with us and functioning from the beginning. There is a lot of truth in the saying, "if you don't use it, you lose it." There is also a lot of truth in the saying, "necessity is the mother of all invention." There was a time when our culture fostered independent and critical thinking, but that has all changed. Parents, schools and lawyers and technology have all contributed to this change.
Parents make their children the center of the universe and teach them they can do whatever they want but they never allow them to fall on their butts, feel the pain and pick themselves back up. Consequence is the result of defying natural laws and it is a major activator of logic! Schools no longer require children to think; rather they are told 'what' to think. They are also no longer required to read which is in and and of itself exercise for the brain. Instead of reading we use symbols, color and avatars to deliver messages. Schools pass out group projects like candy and in effect are alleviating personal responsibility. Children are allowed to use calculators for math problems which puts the brain in sleep mode. They don't want to damage a child's psyche so they promote them to the next grade even though they should be held back. Lawyers have their hand in this also. They have promoted the concept of protection and shrugging personal responsibility by suing everyone for everything. We now have warning labels on everything so we don't have to think. Then of course we have technology. Parents put children in front of computers from the moment they learn to talk. This is to shut them up and entertain them. Schools overuse computers and the result is the elimination of reading, human interaction and discussion. Life is no longer real with real consequences it is virtual and nothing matters. Before the first McDonald's computerized cash register people working there had to know what product cost and they had to know the tax table. Now they have no idea what sales tax is or how to calculate it...they don't need to. People no longer need to figure anything out for themselves. If you want to install a garbage disposal, you just YouTube it, right? Instead of using our God given brains to figure something out, we just watch and mimick. If we really mess it up and chew off our fingers, no big deal the lawyers that advertise on TV will sue Insinkerator for us so we never have to work again and can hire people to do everything for us. The list goes on ad nauseum.
My point is, I believe all people are born with the ability and know how to think but we have created an environment where it isn't necessary and far too many people have fallen asleep!

The reason why some folks can never think or act logically is because they allow their feelings/emotions to take over. This is how so many are controlled. They (manipulators) use the emotions in order to activate response. I am sure you all know this. ...But my point being.. if you never had to think logically or use critical thinking skills... it can be hard to begin to do that once you are an adult and you have always relied on your emotions to carry you through. Chances are, if that is the case... you are probably a miserable second guesser because your emotions are not logical enough to get you through the reality of life.

Some people are just dumb and should not be over-educated because they can't process or synthesize facts, experience and information — so their handlers oops I mean teachers, tell them how the information should make them feel as they regurgitate it online and in the streets.

Watson's mistakes are important to pay attention to. His critical errors and premature jumps to conclusions are, at least, half the lesson.
14496274? ago
The author was tricked, by two little girls, into believing in fairies by photographs of paper cutouts of drawn Fairies. He sent the girls a tamper-proof camera and film and when they returned it he assumed they were real and did not account for the possibility that the fairies were fake cutouts but actually taken in the picture. Watson logic.

don't judge me for this, but what is an NPC that you're referring to? Searching "NPC" brings up "Navy Personnel Command".... and I don't feel this is the correct meaning.
14497397? ago
Sorry Mr. Boomer, an NPC is a non-player character. Usually in video games there are characters that are involved in the game and the storyline, and other characters that just kind of walk around and add to the realism of the game. These are what are typically refered to as NPCs, they aren't really people, just the husks of people programmed to imitate life.
14496743? ago
Non Player Character, its a pretty effective meme imo
14496148? ago
Thinking critically first starts with using reason critically. Understanding what a contradiction is and know that "a" can never be "non-a" at the same time and same respect. Truth can never be non-truth at the same time and same respect. It either is true or not true.
Secondly, one must realize that there is no meaning without interpretation. We must distinguish "a" from "non-a" in order to have meaning.
Thirdly, we must realize no experience is meaningful without interpretation. Every experience is interpreted in light of our basic belief / worldview. The question is, is our worldview the correct one?
All this is only possible if we uphold reason as the laws of thought: law identity which states "a" is "a"; law of non-contradiction which states not both "a" and "non-a" at the same time and same respect; law of excluded-middle which states either "a" or "non-a".

QUIT WATCHING TV, for God's sake. I quit watching tv and fired netflix about 18 months ago. Spend the extra time researching Q drops, watching relevant yt videos, and reading the bible. Take boron and other supplements. Boron helps with cognitive thinking apparently.

Well, swapping fake media for a fake book won't be such a good plan.
14497752? ago
In addition, it's smart alec's like you that keep this nation divided. The founding fathers were much more intelligent than you and the held that so called "fake" book in very high esteem worthy of consultation to form the greatest nation in all of history. So, take your divisiveness somewhere else.
14509735? ago
Is it smart asses making jokes that divide the nation or the tight asses who take themselves too seriously?
14498745? ago
The founding fathers were not christian, they were deists. Big difference.
14674115? ago
I didn't specify whether or not they were Chistians and even deist hold the Bible in high esteem.
14497670? ago
Actually, the Bible is a very real book. It's the most printed book in all of history. As far as the content of this book, it has never been proven to be, "fake". Their are many historical secular writings that support it's legitimacy. Just because you may hate it and reject it does not legitimize your biased claim. Regarding critical thinking, it IS important to learn to think for ourselves. It is one way of thinking but not the only way. It is helpful in understanding natural/temporal things but not very helpful when trying to understand spiritual things. Understanding spiritual things requires divine guidance and intervention. The natural mind cannot comprehend spiritual things by any other means. Just because you don't understand a book of spiritual origin doesn't mean it's "fake".
14509715? ago
Obtaining divine guidance through reading the bible doesn't mean not thinking with your own brain. Jesus died for you but doesn't think for you. The bible - God - invites you to think. Might be why he gave you a brain.
14674167? ago
What would you consider divine guidance if it doesn't effect reasoning? Of course Jesus doesn't think for me but His Holy Spirit influences my thinking and my ability to reason properly. What kind of God would He be if He can't influence the minds He created in us?

You're conflating passages. The talking donkey was in numbers, in the old testament. I'll include the passage for Anon goat reading pleasure.
And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, "If the men have come to call you, rise, go with them; but only do what I tell you." So Balaam rose in the morning and saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab. But God's anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the way as his adversary. Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two servants were with him. And the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand. And the donkey turned aside out of the road and went into the field. And Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the road. Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on either side. And when the donkey saw the angel of the Lord , she pushed against the wall and pressed Balaam's foot against the wall. So he struck her again. Then the angel of the Lord went ahead and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left. When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord , she lay down under Balaam. And Balaam's anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff. Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?" And Balaam said to the donkey, "Because you have made a fool of me. I wish I had a sword in my hand, for then I would kill you." And the donkey said to Balaam, "Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Is it my habit to treat you this way?" And he said, "No." Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand. And he bowed down and fell on his face. And the angel of the Lord said to him, "Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you because your way is perverse before me. The donkey saw me and turned aside before me these three times. If she had not turned aside from me, surely just now I would have killed you and let her live." Then Balaam said to the angel of the Lord , "I have sinned, for I did not know that you stood in the road against me. Now therefore, if it is evil in your sight, I will turn back." And the angel of the Lord said to Balaam, "Go with the men, but speak only the word that I tell you." So Balaam went on with the princes of Balak.
