F.B.I. agents in New York seized Mr. Weiner’s laptop in early October. The investigation was just one of many in the New York office and was not treated with great urgency, officials said. Further slowing the investigation, the F.B.I. software used to catalog the computer files kept crashing.
Eventually, investigators realized that they had hundreds of thousands of emails, many of which belonged to Ms. Abedin and had been backed up to her husband’s computer.
Mr. Comey learned of the Clinton emails on the evening of Oct. 26 and gathered his team the next morning to discuss the development.

Federal authorities in New York have issued a subpoena for records pertaining to allegations that Anthony D. Weiner exchanged sexually explicit messages with a 15-year-old girl, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

It was not clear which records investigators in the office of the United States attorney, Preet Bharara, would subpoena. The person was not authorized to discuss the matter and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
A spokesman for the New York Police Department said it was investigating Mr. Weiner but did not elaborate.
So both the NYPD and the FBI opened investigations, but only one issued a subpoena that day.

What's the warrant say? The warrant would have to say what the evidence to be seized is and where the location to be searched is.
Subject Device 3 is a laptop computer, believed to be a Dell, that was transferred from the Target Subject to the Security Firm on September 22, 2016 and is currently housed at the security firm's office.
They date the seizure of the laptop to the 26th, the day the warrants were issued and October 3 as the first day Comey learned Clinton emails were on the laptop. The 26th fits with the S/P texts on the 28th. So I think the 26th makes sense. It was the first day they could legally pickup the laptop.
I learned how the girl Weiner was sexting with found her way to the Daily Mail she reached out Sidney Leathers, remember her? And Leather's agent told the Daily Mail and cut a deal

If he had encouraged an underage female to take explicit photos or video of herself, he could be charged with producing child pornography, a felony that carries a minimum prison term of 15 years. FBI agents in New York immediately began investigating.
On Sept. 26, after federal prosecutors in New York obtained a search warrant, and the FBI collected Weiner’s iPhone, iPad and laptop. Agents began examining the computer — a silver, 15.6-inch 2015 Dell Inspiron 7000 — for any pictures, videos or other evidence involving Weiner’s teenage sexting partner. An agent sorting through the contents of the hard drive came across a jolting find: a State Department memo and some emails between Abedin and Hillary Clinton. The documents were not covered by the sex-crimes warrant, which meant that the FBI had no legal right to examine them.
The presidential election was five weeks away.
There's a lot of details here about who at the FBI knew what when. The overall story is that Comey screwed up big time by going public with his pronouncements because he gave himself a false choice and chose to ignore long stand Depart of Justice Guidelines. Rosenstein is particularly good on this false choice.
That happened to me like twice when responding to you. I hate that.
I think the truepundit/erik prince story is a deliberate political hoax. Either they are lying or were lied to. They were trying to make it look like a political coverup and muddying the waters right before the election. None of the consequences came true. Clinton was not indicted. All the others were not indicted and no one from NYPD has said boo about it. I also think that disproves the wild claims about stomach churning evidence.
I have seen no evidence at all the NYPD examined the laptop at all.
The only open question I have is the DOJ thanked the NYPD SVU. Why?
Was that just a way of keeping them happy because the Feds got the conviction and the locals easily could have? Or did they do material work? One way they could have helped is talking to the girl. That's their expertise.
Given that neither of the two lengthy dives into what happened with the laptop mention the NYPD at all, could it be NYPD SVU helped in other ways? This is the open question.
