dry conditions, mismanagement of forest resources (leaving large amount of dry dead wood without logging or clearing underbrush), and effective suppression of smaller fires for a period of time causes conditions like we see now
one (or multiple) arsonists can start fires that quickly spread and can destroy large areas
this is why forest resources have to be used instead of allowed to pile up into tinder. they will burn eventually
