Here's the phrasing I've found most effective after a series of A/B tests: Wait until someone mentions another nation (such as China) producing propaganda. Then say: "I like to ask people, you know we produced propaganda during World War 2, what year did we stop?".
The rhetorical beauty of it is by saying you ask other people (rather than the person you're speaking to), they get to elevate themselves at the hypothetical person's expense, joining your side and condescending towards this imaginary foolish person.
