What likely happened is that the Alexa legitimately malfunctioned and sent the message to a contact in the owner’s phone by mistake. Don’t get me wrong, these things are obviously spying on people. But the smartphone in your pocket has already been doing that for years.
Right, so we should just add to the bs and get as many spying devices as we can. I'm planning on ditching my smartphone, and I know many others are planning that as well and some already have. I'm tired of talking about something to someone and then seeing ads for it later. This is Google doing this, not Facebook since I don't have Facebook.
Alexa? It could be a opportunity for some serious premeditated AI subversion. Lock Alexa in a sound proof room, and go in varied hours and pump that bitch full of disinfo. Talk about cocaine deals, how your in the market for a Abrams tank, about you sex change, your 45 plus kids with your 9 wives, etc.
I went to purchase a Bluetooth speaker last month and they are trying to roll out Alexa and Google in pretty much all devices. It's coming, just like it did with smart phones.

Get a land line and get rid of your android device as well. At the least, leave your cell phone in your car, never in your house.

Your cellphone and PC / laptop do the same things as Alexa. Unless you are willing to completely disconnect, then they are always listening.

There are ways to mitigate the damage with these.

No I’m not saying disregard the Alexa. Obviously we shouldn’t be buying these things. I’m just saying this is nothing new.
