Why is that not possible with Voat? It's because of another reason... What is that reason?
There is no reason you could not set up a patreon and call it something else and shut down preview.voat.co down. I have no issue with keeping Voat alive, I just can't do it myself as I don't have the means.
Why did you say this now and not 3 months ago? Hell just keeping the site up until Jan 21st 2020 would be a much better approach than this route you've taken.
The amount of heartache and dread I feel for this sites closing has me afraid that it's existence might actually be life or death to me, as sad as that sounds. Please allow members of the community to contribute, please Putt.
I have come here to blow off steam with fedposts, and if I lose my ability to do that I am going to blow a gasket the next time I see some black foolishness or pedo faggot forced on me by the jews.
who know's what I will do if that happens. Maybe that's the goal, to finally have someone they can demonize in the media.
Putt you really need to think about letting the community help take load from your shoulders. If you need financial assistance for the site let us help. We all need to come together as a community to fix this problem. Even if it is a short term fix it will give you and the community time to solidify funding and find any help you might need.
I'm sure you have heard this all before. However, I don't like the taste this situation leaves in my mouth. I feel like we failed Voat somehow.
Let us have the honor and responsibility to put our money where our mouth is and show we truly are serious about what we stand for and not just giving it all lip service. We have to be given the chance or we ourselves will never know. I am not tech savvy enough to know the ins and outs of how it all works, but I am most assuredly willing to give it a go.
There are propably a bunch of retired boomers and poor goats who'd struggle more to pay a subscription than shills.
Though I don't believe there are many shills on voat. It would be much more cost- and time efficient to code a bot.
I actually thought about coding one myself, to deal with QAnons. It would search for new threads above a certain number of votes (say + 10) and quote a random failed prediction of Q. A fairly simple algorithm.
But I wanted to wait until after the election/inauguration. I guess that will now never happen.
If funding is the only issue then user funding is possible. Bitchute is fully funded now, a feat I would have thought impossible the last time voat had funding problems. Things have been shifting though, too many people have been de-platformed and are starving for free speech. I bet if you setup a subscribe star with a realistic goal you could reach it. Especially considering the utter melt down you have created by dropping the bomb like you did. Either way bro, thanks for the good times.
What's the price for it all ? or is there a way to donate in order to keep it in tact and operational ?
Me and a few other Goats would be more than happy and willing to contribute in order to keep the community that's been built together in order to not be cast out as refuges like we have been in the past by other sites that either gave up on us or turned against our kind
I already emailed him. Not sure if he’ll respond. Apparently numerous people have offered to buy the site and he’s refused.
I really don’t understand it. It seems there are plenty of other people offering to but the site and maintain it. In my email I asked him if he would sell it. I could easily host it myself and pay him for the site if he’d like but for whatever reason he doesn’t seem interested...
No, you are. We are ALL willing to chip in, we all want Voat to stay up, it's just that it is only a temporary measure. We >need to start from scratch with a new model, not bolt on to a flawed model and run into the same issues we've always had.
I don't want to burn people's cash delaying the inevitable. I'm saving you all some money by not wasting your money!
I'll email Putt and ask if he can give a link to download a limited portion of the database. Then we can start from scratch and do it the right way.
Hi Goats. Occasional lurker here, just made an account.
I saw this comment on poal saying that voat is particularly expensive to maintain compared to other reddit clones because of Microsoft and Azure licensing fees
In the past they claimed up to $6k a month because their code is shit and they pay Microsoft license fees. Ruqqus is $300 to 700 a month. SaidIt is around $80 a month for the same traffic as Ruqqus.
$6k a month!? What the hell!? No sane person would pay Microsoft (of all companies) so much when they could literally just copy Saidit's code, or Reddit's old source code, and change a few things. As both an economist and a programmer, this makes me hurt inside. At least Saidit is cost effective, which makes me feel a bit better.
Yes they were trapped in the Windows ecosystem and using Azure. But wait there's more, they used to host it in Germany too! And they started as open source but went closed source for "security." A complete train wreck all around.
Nope that's just the Azure licensing fees alone, before any server costs or any other costs. Voat's total monthly cost was probably somewhere around $10k (this is the saidit.net site owner)
I don't know if this is true, but if it is, perhaps it would be better for Putt to offer the community a download link to the database so that
We know that the information contained here will be preserved and we can even reference it on our own computers
The site can be recreated with source code that is less expensive to maintain.
For privacy, certain tables (like ones containing private messages) could be removed before releasing the database. And I assume passwords are already hashed but if not they could be released in hashed form (but keep in mind hashed passwords can be used for rainbow table attacks so this could be a security / privacy risk if people are using the same username and / or password here that they use for other sites) Also, when I was browsing through the subverses here, I saw a lot of porn subs, even subs that looked like they might contain underage porn. So he could possibly just give us the data for the most important subs. History, science, memes etc. That would reduce hosting costs and make the download size more manageable.
@ResurrectionofVoat
The code was ported to .NET Core a few years back. We have been off Azure since then. Look at the code on Github (2017), that was already part of the porting effort then.
Btw I posted this elsewhere in the thread already but apparently this is why he refuses to give the source code to anyone. Really hoping he will at least share the database or part of it.
No, you are. We are ALL willing to chip in, we all want Voat to stay up, it's just that it is only a temporary measure. We >need to start from scratch with a new model, not bolt on to a flawed model and run into the same issues we've always had.

Interesting. I don't know why he hasn't moved off of Azure, but Putt apparently thinks it is necessary to start from scratch. It sounds like the issues with the software go pretty deep. I just found this comment by him (I can't link to it because of my comment score)
No, you are. We are ALL willing to chip in, we all want Voat to stay up, it's just that it is only a temporary measure. We >need to start from scratch with a new model, not bolt on to a flawed model and run into the same issues we've always had.

I just emailed PuttItOut. If a group of us could come together with 3-6 months of hosting costs, we could take over the responsibility and that would buy us some time to setup a user donations system that makes sense.
What if the site was set up in a way that the donation system would come up whenever funds start to get low? How much does this site cost a month to run? $1000?
I know that the mainstream advertising platforms wouldn't touch this... but I'm sure there would be patriot owned businesses that would buy ads on a site like this - just like places advertise on X22 and all these other guys. I love that there aren't ads on here now, but that's a small price to pay really. Even if ad revenue carried half the costs, or whatever. Just a thought.
There is definitely some potential for ad revenue, I know payment processors won't touch voat, but we can figure out the logistic of using alternate funding methods like cryptocurrency.
If the costs are $11K like I have heard, then it would take 110 of us at that pledge level. I'd give $100 per month to keep this place around. I don't watch television anymore (largely thanks to this place) so I could throw my entertainment dollars this way.
It's not just the bandwidth it's the processing power. Voat runs on .Net and is calculating basically everything on the page in real time. There is some caching being done but Voat is probably using a good deal of processing power and RAM.

How much are we talking? $10,000 a month costs. $100,000 upfront to keep the show on the road to give time to formulate a plan?
What are twitter users valued at? $15 each? How many goats are there?
Twit market cap $42.92 B Users 340m = $12.50 per user - some users are more equal than others. 80:20 probably applies.
My guess is voat has 250,000 active goats, so worth $2.5m? Lesser network effect? $1m? Pick a number.
There is all that rhs empty margin that could carry static ads wasted.
I don't see money as the problem.

There is definitely some potential for ad revenue, I know payment processors won't touch voat, but we can figure out the logistic of using alternate funding methods like cryptocurrency.

If you codeworded a crowd fund on here you'd have the cash in 12 hours.

Do a 'Goat Rescue' ad and put a sappy Sarah McLachlan-esque ballad with images of sad/neglected goats.
elcob32 ago
Even if you torture me with Sara McLachlan music I will still donate.
RevDrStrangelove ago
How 'bout we torture with Sarah McLachlan music until you donate.
Then we keep on doing it for the LULZ.
uvulectomy ago
Easy there, Satan.
WolfgangBlack ago
He said Sarah McLachlan, not Yoko Ono songs.

Personally I'd throw in $100 monthly
elcob32 ago
If the costs are $11K like I have heard, then it would take 110 of us at that pledge level. I'd give $100 per month to keep this place around. I don't watch television anymore (largely thanks to this place) so I could throw my entertainment dollars this way.
truckboattruck ago
i would so do that.
i dont even mind if putt makes a profit. hell i would prefer it.
maybe then he could afford some measure of staff and really open the flood gates.
Zanbato ago
$11k for a text based site :D
grumpywashingtonian ago
yeah, I just can't believe that as real.
reason247 ago
Total bullshit. We all know it. I bet it's 50 bucks a month.
elcob32 ago
It's not just the bandwidth it's the processing power. Voat runs on .Net and is calculating basically everything on the page in real time. There is some caching being done but Voat is probably using a good deal of processing power and RAM.
Zanbato ago
sure, I agree. Even if they had a high end dedicated server with lots of resources, you are talking imo in the hundreds.

Same here, brother.
