Grieg, Orff, & Mussorgsky should make the list too, some great works there and Orff was contemporary. If anyone still has a CD player, classical CDs are the lowest priced ones at used music shops. Look for works on the Deutsche Grammophon, Denon, Mobile Fidelity, & Telarc labels. There are other good labels but in general, recordings from these companies were good. If you are using LPs however, be prepared for sticker shock.

I love German lieder. Listen to the songs of Schubert and Schumann, and later Richard Strauss.

Satie and Debussy are lovely.... Really just about anything from those two.

Chopin's piano works are breathtaking.

Also if anyone is interested: "classical" actually refers to music written in the Classical Era (around 1730-1820).

Most "classical" music that people really love today is actually from the Romantic Era (around 1820- early 1900s) and from the Impressionist movement (early 1900s). Look up music from those years.

Thank you for posting this. Since the birth of my last baby I’ve been listening to classical music in the car and when I’m working around the house. I couldn’t bear to think about my innocent impressionable baby listening to the absolute trash that passes for music these days so I changed my habits.

Also, this whole thread is just so white. Can you imagine any other race discussing what’s being talked about here? Hell,there’s even research showing retailers that play classical music drive away non whites. I highly recommend listening to the London Chamber Orchestra’s version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. It was recorded, if I recall correctly, sometime in the 90s. It is tremendous.

4. Beethoven - everyone knows him, but, like Tchaikovsky, he was able to wrap so much into his music it's impossible not to walk away feeling something
5. Gustav Holst - The planets. Your welcome.

That's enough to start with. Go do some homework.

Instead of music, try one of these audiobooks instead. You'll find after a few of these a totally different "rhythm".
