The Talmud was unknown to the Catholic Popes until 1217. Centuries later, a German orientalist named Eisenmenger translated the Talmud (Hebrew) into German... the Jews of the time did not appreciate this and offered to buy the translation for 12,000 forins, the equivalent of the sum of wages for the entire military at that time, when he declined, they used leverage against the Holy Roman Emperor who then seized it. The translation was the rarest book in the world for centuries. The story is fascinating and can be found by listening to the audio 'Eisenmenger and his Banned Work' by Michael A Hoffman II https://www.revisionisthistory.org/page15/page15.html

I've never heard about Eisenmenger translating the Talmud, or Jews trying to seize the translation, or any of that before. Interesting.
