There is something seriously wrong here. The codebase has not been updated. The site goes down for days without explanation. No sign of our one and only admin. @Atko comes in to save the day? Wtf?

I've waited a week. So, if @puttitout does not post an explanation by tomorrow, along with an updated canary notice I'm gone.

No, it's a Linux thing.

Chmod is a command to change the permissions on a file or directory.

The 3 digit number after chmod determines the exact combination of permissions set, the 777 code specifically gives everyone read, write, and execute permissions.
