Subverses are like gardens. They are NOT for letting all the plants grow wild.

The subverses are a garden where you try to grow a certain content in certain areas. This is why we subscribe to a certain subverse in the first place - it has a certain type of content we are looking for. If we let all subverses be diluted with any content, it defeats any point of subscribing to begin with.

Having said that, a garden needs to be maintained. Just planting seeds isn't enough. You have to keep going out there and picking away the tiny weeds before they take over the garden. This is what a Moderator has to do. A Moderator has to defend the garden of appropriate content from the weeds of unrelated crap. You do this by comparing a post to the subverse's vision and deleting the things that don't fit. This is why we can't let literally every sub be unmoderated. We already have /v/whatever for an unchecked landscape of wild posts.

This is a shared garden, though, so if a Moderator isn't satisfying the community, he should be removed by the community, but to say any moderation is wrong is silly.
