The soviets edited "non-persons" out of photos for the crime of being insufficiently committed to the glorious revolution long before photoshop was imagined, let alone implemented. Can't have someone guilty of thought-crime appearing next to the "Brilliant Genius of Humanity", after all. The soviets' methods were utterly crude and totally unsophisticated compared to what's possible these days. Think about that for a moment.
