Bad advice imo. NSA, CIA, DHS, FBI all sniffing your traffic. VPN's are broken and visible to intel. VPN traffic is even highlighted and promotes you to a higher scrutiny.
Don't know the actual solution but there is no such thing as secure communication online - source: have years of IT knowledge (as in employment).
Electronic communications that we are using was first created by darpa, all communication protocols are broken by design - back doors built into all consumer level OS's that we are all using to communicate.
Don't kid yourself - I mean totally use a VPN if you want to, but maybe use searchvoat.co and check out some of the VPN posts that have been going around.
To dismiss a VPN so flippantly is beyond silly. It's one thing to push a defeatist attitude and think that the big bad powers that be are so powerful that we're all just little bugs to be squashed, it's another to spread "no hope" bullshit like this. A VPN combined with good browsing habits and not sharing any info that can dox you solves 95% of the bullshit you want to avoid online.
"good browsing habits"? What are some good browsing habits in your opinion? And while I agree you shouldn't self dox because of today's online/political climate, are you advocating for self censoring? Will there ever be a time in the future where we can stand firm online and declare "this is the truth!" about the state of affairs of our world?

So does script management, managing routing tables, firewall rules, IP/domain blacklisting... All things to be considered beyond just "get a VPN".
In my post, I even wrap up by saying "use a VPN if you want to" - I'm not saying it's a bad thing. But the post above ours just says "get a VPN" and people who read that post without technical knowledge might think they can do a google search for VPN and sign up with just any company and then think "I'm safe now!" - not the case.
The post above us merely stated - "get a VPN" to which you replied "sound advice on all accounts". I interjected to offer some cons because there are plenty of cons to the one sentence "pro VPN" comments you made. Not all VPN's are equal, and sites which offer VPN's for monthly/yearly service have been known to share your info with gov agencies.
To dismiss a VPN so flippantly is beyond silly.
Don't get your panties in a wad, mine was merely an opposing point of view - glib as it was - as to why people shouldn't just go blindly sign up for a VPN. I even promoted researching discussions about VPNs on Voat so that people could arm themselves with information before wasting their money on honeypot VPN sites. And shame on you for whining that I did so.
Furthermore:
It's one thing to push a defeatist attitude and think that the big bad powers that be are so powerful that we're all just little bugs to be squashed
They assassinate presidents, they control currency, they infiltrate grassroots movements, they control information, they own all of the industries, and they own the WWW along with its infrastructure - they are big, and they are bad, and they could squash any of us like bugs if we were a threat to their power structure.
In my eyes fleeting, one sentence drive by advice for something as complicated as VPNs and the reaches of intel agencies is WORSE for your average person than to actually go back and forth about the truths of electronic communication.
it's another to spread "no hope" bullshit like this.
In your brevity you have underestimated the most powerful and invasive government with rogue intel agencies the world has ever seen. Never underestimate your adversaries, even if it is to offer topical advice to people who want to watch videos.
I just want people to think and explore their options. Thanks for the downvoat!
