Yesterday I experienced first hand why normies should be permitted to lurk here. I can understand trying to protect the community from infiltration of negative entities, but everybody should be able to see the content. Many people just want to scan for info.

Yesterday, my husband was trying to show the guy he works for the Jim Watkins OANN interview. We had both seen it that morning before I went to work. We found it on voat, of course. After much searching, they had only found bad links or links to "weird" stuff. My husband didn't have his phone and didn't want his log in info on another's device, so they couldn't log in to voat to try there.

Anyway, I meet up with them some time later, and using my phone to access voat I found the link---which was still up and valid--in about 40 seconds.

Long story short(kinda), information that is hard to find on the outside, can usually be found here on voat. He said as soon as voat is open again he would love to join, pretty much just to lurk and get news. He's also looking forward to 8ch returning for the same reason. My husband and I have brought him up to speed on a lot of shit and have seemingly reinvigorated his drive to seek out trustworthy information. If we are truly the news now, why are we closed off from the people we need to share it with? Why can't those that want to know(those that aren't current voat users) actually see to know?

The fact that information was found so quickly on voat when it was seemingly scrubbed from other parts of the web displays how important this site is for info gathering. Not everyone tweets, as shocking as that may be, and Facebook, well fuck FB.

I agree I'm ashamed to admit it but a close friend I led to voat has been begging me to lend him my log in details because he can't lurk voat or 8ch on his rest hours anymore.

I told him to make an account every time registration was open but he never did. Now he's stuck with 4chan and poal.

I get why read only wouldn't work for DDoS reasons and a mirrored site would be expensive and still suceptible to DDoS so I suggest a referral code system.

Let's say you earn achievements that give you an account specific referral code which the admin can use to backtrack referrals so they can't be used by malicious entities without being counter productive when caught.

The hurdles here are allowing referers and the refered to stay anonymous to each other while letting the refered person register a new username.

Creating a log in service for these folks that can't be DDoSed easily probably requires an email code.

And deciding what landmarks deserve referral achievements, I think if we want voat to keep growing at a good pace we need a few time based referral achievements, maybe at 1 year and 3 years. Probably a good idea to offer referral codes based on contribution points too, I'm biased because I want at least 1 such code to get my friend off my back but maybe referral codes at at every 2k ccp and every 1k scp. Tuning that is up to Putt I'd just want at least one code but I think considering I'm a 4year+ user with a fair amount of ccp, 2 codes would probably be a reasonable amount for an account that looks like mine.

I can think of another few people who would appreciate referral codes.

Hell my old gaming buddies and I are fed up with all of the social media systems and their censorship just building a subverse here to replace the other social media and act like a stream lined version of our old clan forums would practically be ideal.

Have you ever considered that white hats may have ASKED Putt to quarantine us while 8chan is down?

My thought is that FFs were being prepared to generate public outrage against both sites, and quarantining Voat while shutting down 8chan is thwarting those plans.

The reason is probably due to the infiltration of shills here to gas light and make free speech look violent, racist, deranged, etc. while the fight for the narrative is in full swing.

The only reason that you currently cannot see voat unless signed in is due to the constant and highly professional ddos attack on this site. This site has run for as long as I have known it with the ability to lurk as we accept that 95% of views on a post are lurkers. When lurking is enabled it was allowing the attackers to drain the resources of the site and it was down for extended periods of time for everyone.

Once the ddos stops putt can re-enable this, right now we are privileged to still be able to access the site.

Legal definition of a threat requires three constituents: A target, a place and a time. So while it may be distasteful it is constitutionally protected speech. Also if you notice there's a trend with the kill all niggers folk, bunches of alts which usually get found out then mysteriously vanish and a newbie starts chanting it. It is pretty transparent.

I made a post about this the other day.

The most interesting thing to come out of that thread was a suggestion to make a read only mirror and host it on another server, keeping the main site locked to registered users. That way normies could still get the message, and if the read only site comes under attack, we're still good here and able to post freely.

That seems like a pretty reasonable solution. Have no idea about the cost of such things, but if JW can build his own version of cloud fare after claiming 8ch makes 12 grand a year, then this should be completely possible.
