I get the free soeach approach with Voat. What confuses me is why Voat even allows for Mods or the banning of posts. If that is a founding principal, why are there tools here which provide the means for censorship?

Because otherwise spambots would overrun the place.

Is reporting spam not consider censorship? This page was overrun with offtopic posts that just said “nigger” and nothing else. To me, that was spam because it was in the way of the boards duscussion but people flipped out that those posts were being removed.

Take a look around at the rest of the site. How much spam do you see? Then consider that the mods didn't bother reaching out to the existing sub or even try to integrate. Instead they just ham-fistedly started recreating the very place they were just booted from. Voat will not allow reddit to be re-created here hence the hazing and spamming. Most of which could have been avoided if the situation was approached with a little forethought and some research. There was even an example set just before this with the MDE folks on a good way to integrate that noone bothered to look at. Blame voat all you want but it was the mods that shit the bed here and that is who everyone was pissed off at. This place is not like reddit. There are no organized mobs like tmor and drama that get together with the sole purpose of gangbanging any given sub.

I used to post fairly regularly on the old site until the moderation got entirely out of control. Mod actions here have consequences because they cannot be hidden from the community. That's a good thing because, under normal circumstances, there is very little need for moderation. People really should get this whole idea of moderators being some kind of leaders of the movement out of their heads. I find it very telling that they now want to move everyone over to 8chan where there will be no mod accountability to the community.
