Missed a naming opportunity.. Could have called it DCATT

criminalmacabre ago

Kek, the more places they have to pay to DDoS the more fun we will have

ThisWeirdIndividual ago

Just a question from someone ignorant of this system: if users in this system of yours create a community to harass, doxx and IRL stalk (or worse) people...how is it dealed with? It isn't? Don't you think governments will quickly make the thing illegal?

Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question :)

go1dfish ago

Yep, one approach we've been considering is to focus on the listing and sorting systems as an index into an existing datastore like maid safe or http://ipfs.io

The downside to this approach is that it's not yet clear if a pure browser client can participate/contribute to those content networks without some sort of server go-between.

We're ideally looking for a p2p in browser solution so that even lurkers will help contribute to the health of the network by simply browsing it.

Clasm ago

I don't think that would be possible without massive amounts of active post screening. It'll probably never get that far though, because the moment you accidentally block an individual's opinion, instead of an orginization's sponsored posts, you've entered the realm of full-on censorship.

SecureRhino ago

You can't make a 100% successful automated system, but if you provide more tools to spot obvious shills the cost of shilling goes up. For example one could mark posts by users who are new or who only comment in threads containing similar keywords. With some mashine learning you could likely go even further, makeing shilling much harder and more time intensive.

Clasm ago

Just because someone only comments on a particular set of topics doesn't mean they are a shill though. There are many lurkers who don't comment at all unless their topics come up. checking for new users only also has some cons, such as companies buying up many usernames during beta tests and sitting on them until needed later. Your best bet in this case is to find a bunch of names with similar naming conventions and nearly identical creation dates.

immibis ago

I do not want an algorithm filtering which posts I see.

SecureRhino ago

You don't have to filter the posts, just mark them in an obvios and transparent way. Something like "suspected shill, only posts in threads about TPP". Of course the detection would need to use more information than just that. Determined shillers would always be able to evade detection, but they would have to invest more time/manpower.

It's just a very difficult thing to support in a distributed anonymous system. Aether doesn't support it either.

What we will have is realtime previews of your markdown processed comment though.

We're not opposed to edits/user deletions; we just have enough hard problems to solve as it is.

beetusvoater ago

Of topic:

Is there something like https://www.reddit.com/r/Rad_Decentralization/ on voat?

go1dfish ago

Not that I know of, there is a very small /v/cryptoanarchy though.

I have the optimum design for this system I was going to give it away to Etherum or the open Bazaar guys but id rather give it to someone that will do something with it, who are your VCs ? I know nothing.

go1dfish ago

No VCs at the moment, it's all volunteer work so far. Ryan X Charles has been leading up the effort and quit his current job to work on this.

He's been talking some with investors but I don't know how far those talks have gotten.

If you PM me an email I'll get you into the slack channel.

justletmevoat ago

If it requires anything other than a browser it's DOA.

Also, karma == bitcoin will guarantee no one votes.

Milty ago

Depends on how much voats are worth. If an upvoat is a single satoshi I'd be spamming the shit out of it. You could spam all day and never reach 1 cent spent. It aint no thing. What if each user had the ability to set what their vote was worth?

justletmevoat ago

No, it doesn't depend on how much votes are worth. It's how much of a pain it is to get setup voting.

What do you think of IPFS?

go1dfish ago

It looks quite interesting and has come up as a potential content storage solution.

http://maidsafe.net is another similar project.

But ideally we want the browser clients to be full network participants that contribute to the health of the network. It's not yet clear if this is possible with IPFS or maid safe yet.

go1dfish ago

Yeah I git it.

SecureRhino ago

Those sound like great goals. Since you seem to be basing a lot around money: be very careful about the incentive systems you set up. If you don't know how people are going to exploit your system you are doing it wrong.

NNTPChan (aka overchan) is a decentralized nntp based imageboard, it has been an ongoing project of mine, the old version has been deployed for 2 years now. It's being rewritten I am starting to advertise it a bit more.

https://github.com/majestrate/nntpchan

go1dfish ago

Very interesting, PM me an email if you'd like an invite into the slack channel.

moister ago

I don't really use anything except IRC since "if it's not broke don't fix it". There's 2 internet accessible instances http://i2p.rocks/nntpchan/ and https://topchan.xyz/ running my beta software, the rest are on tor/i2p running the old stack. (all links are probably nsfw)

randomdude69 ago

Went on the clearnet frontend, made a thread to test, works pretty smooth.

mscomies ago

Probably shouldn't host it on github. They'll shut it down the moment SRS claims that it's going to be a haven for misogynists.

go1dfish ago

We're only hosting the collaboration there and being careful not to use naughty words. All our efforts are also backed up elsewhere.

lbruiser ago

We're only hosting ... All our efforts

Dude, thank you!

I'm sure you guys have seen Aether and wanted to ask what does your project differ from theirs? Also when do you think it will be ready for everyday use?

go1dfish ago

Aether has been very inspirational to my own thought process and others on the project. Even before DATT I was talking about aether:

https://voat.co/v/technology/comments/164922/447320

At that time I was planning on building something on my own; but now that a lot of people smarter than myself have stepped in we can be quite a bit more ambitious.

We don't really have any timeframes other than When it's ready and as soon as possible.

IMO the biggest difference from Aether is that all of us at DATT agree that a browser client is absolutely essential to our success. Aether is great in concept but in practice the requirement for installation will always be a big barrier to entry.

Ideally we want to build an advanced javascript P2P client that functions in your browser; this doesn't mean more secure non-browser clients will be excluded; only that we are starting with web browsers as a baseline. Eyeballs attract content, and web browsers attract eyeballs.

Another differentiator from DATT is that we want to support some form of moderation. It's not clear exactly what form this will take yet but there has been a good bit of support for the "Collective" idea I propose here: http://go1dfish.me/blog/crypto-anarchy-social-aggregator-bitcoin-world-wide-ledger

Uncensorship is not the only motive at work though; many on the project like Ryan are prioritizing building out a financial model that not only eschews the need for traditional advertisers; but rewards contributors to the network.

It's a very ambitious project; but I'm frequently impressed with the level of talent we've been able to get on board with this. I'm probably one of the least capable active devs on the project ;) I've been working primarily on the browser UX platform drawing on my work on http://snew.github.io

Consider me hyped!!! All aboard!

Super cool. So... btc id or paypal donation address? I'm super excited to see this.
