Linux isn't a panacea. I used to be a big proponent of OSS and so on, but it has its own issues that really shouldn't be overlooked. For example, you can't expect it to run exactly how you want it to out of the box. I learned this from years of experience using Linux. Commercial OS usually has a certain amount of auto-configuration. This is not the case with Linux. Sometimes things will work great, but not always, and if there's a bad mismatch, your graphics and sound can suck, for example. If you actually have the time to sit down and figure it out yourself, by all means do so but be aware it can be a significant amount of effort to customize, something you needn't much bother with in Microsoft or Apple.
Updates come out every second Tuesday of the month if you are too much of a fuckup to update when they are scheduled on a computer you use for making money then you deserve everything that happens to you. It's not fucking rocket science.
No. It's still more like trying to be a professional, but skipping all the quality assurance steps. OP probably runs out of gas on the way to gigs too. Stupid VW Van should fill itself up.
I carry a laptop for work at job sites. It needs to be ready to go or I look like an idiot. It needs to run software that the job requires, none of which is on Linux. I chose to get a pro version on Windows, so I can schedule updates. Then I actually let the updates run before the job, I never have to look like an idiot.
If you're bright enough to figure out how to run this shit on Linux, you ought to be well able to handle Windows updates. Sounds more like a hobbyist DJ didn't check out their equipment prior to the gig.
Windows used to get a bad rap for security vulnerabilities. Then they made updating more difficult to disable. Now they get a bad rap for updating.
Try this. Before going pro, maybe work out a gig checklist. Item 1, Use Pro version of Windows so you can defer updates. Item 2, Run updates. Item 3, gas up the van....
Were it not for forced updates, he'd probably be staring at porn popup malware after booting up at the gig.
Too many fucking idiots used mods to disable Windows 10 updates. You'll see this shit all over the web. So when MS undoes that shit and forces security updates these dumb asses get slammed.
Same shit as back in the day, people not wanting to run the security updates then blame MS and everyone else when their computer gets fucked up. Although now its even worse because these computers are used as bots and malware servers.
Lolmfg everyone knows you use Apple for stage performance.... compose on whatever you like, but ffs people, I don’t care if you think it’s overpriced, you can’t put a price on reliability. The Show Must Go On.
Anyone who relies on thier computers to survive but refuses to learn how they work is a dumbass who deserves whatever bad things Windows does to them. Turn off automatic updates and torrent a cracked Win 7 with telemetry removed.
hang on OP, are you, a mixed race mutt, trying to tell me what i should use as a DJ? No thanks. Ill stick to the opinions of white humans, not Mischling garbage such as yourself.
Sorry, something went wrong during the update process, but fuck if I am going to tell you what it was, I'm just going to start rolling back the changes, and no, you can't ask how long it will take.
The tool works perfectly well if you manage and take care of it. I'm sorry to hear that you're too much of a fucking mutt to be able to handle Windows.
I'm sorry to hear that you're too much of a fucking mutt to be able to handle Windows
Why would you want to in the first place? It's an inferior product regardless of whether you can "handle it" (which apparently means capitulate to it's owners demands)
What the fuck do DJs even do exactly? I mean what's involved beyond pressing play and blending the song together so there's no pauses, which surely can be done by software now?
Blending the song together so it sounds good and not like dog shit takes some skill and practice. Last time I looked at software you could make loop patterns based on 1/4 1/8 2 4 8 and 16 bars, you could play samples load effects like flanger, phazer, reverb etc. But yeah really there job is to blend music and for the music to not stop, making it not sound like dog shit is an after thought sometimes.
Try doing all of what you just said, but using vinyl records instead. Think about physically having to beat match 2 ( sometimes 3) records, keep them matched, then add effects and blend the hi’s mids and lows together without it sounding like dogshit.
Computer DJ’s have it easy. I know, I’ve done both methods. I prefer vinyl.
Programs are decent but drivers/hardware either just don't work or are a massive pain in the ass to setup. I know it's getting better and is possibly more usable since the last time I tried a year or two ago.
Windows does let you schedule updates. But you have to go in and actually set stuff up.
For him to get locked into an update like this means the image is old, he fucked with the update system either continuing to delay updates or trying to disable it all together, or he's in whatever MS currently in whatever they call the beta update program.
Yeah but then you have to deal with the absolutely retarded power cord, throw away all of your old devices, scratch your head if someone ever gives you a USB key, and suffer through the ridiculous learning curve of a terrible keyboard layout AND stop thinking in terms of right clicking.
It's really the only choice if you're serious about doing anything audio. I find it unfortunate because I love Linux. Windows is shite for every application other than gaming.
This, it’s unfortunately about like gaming and windows.
Irregardless of any other technical superiority the best software is just available for that platform.
In the case of music, most of it is available for Windows (unlike games in the reverse) but the ease/stability and hardware uniformity are a big win for pro music production.
Ubuntu Studio and Ardour can be solid and quite powerful if you put time into learning it but it’s not as easy to pick up as more common setups. Reaper on Linux can be a really nice experience though.
If you are a DJ, then maybe you should ensure the updates are not waiting to install when you have to DJ. I get the hate for the forced updates, but if you depend on it not updating and rebooting during a certain period it is simple to ensure that.
If you need to run windows for whatever reason and don't want to pay for it, look up "Windows Loader 2.2.2." You simply download and run the program and it'll generate a product key for you.
I am and I already do. And I'll say from experience, it's either going to work for you or it won't.
Right now, it depends entirely on what programs you use and if it can run it on Linux or there is an equivalent that you can use instead.
For example, Ableton Live won't run on Linux, but Bitwig does. If you are willing to spend some time on learning how to use Bitwig instead, you will be fine. Traktor Scratch doesn't run on Linux, but Mixxx does. Same thing applies.
That's what I was going to say....a lot of DAWs and live work stations just don't work natively with Linux as much as we love Linux.
I remember back in like...fuck I'm old it was 2003 BT doing a Laptop set in DC and his laptops shut down 2 times during the show....and we were all unimpressed.
If only Mixxx had a phase meter. It's the one feature missing that would make it a drop in replacement for Scratch or Serato.
Ardour is a great multitrack recorder. But, if you really want to use it to it's fullest, install jackd, seq24, and some softsynths like zynaddsubfx, and LADSPA for all the effects you could possibly want.
I have been using it for recording and effects currently. I have all of those installed (and some other synths too) but when I route a synth to jack and then ardour I haven't been able to get the output to make noise in ardour. Maybe I'll play with it again today.
I have no knowledge of DJ software on Linux, but have you tried running that Windows stuff with the latest Wine? I mean 3.6 runs Witcher 3 with the DXVK installed from the AUR. How hard can it be to run that stuff you mentioned?
Audio programs take full advantage of your sound card and all audio devices that you have connected. To get them working in WINE you will also need to make sure any audio devices you have will work in WINE, and if they don't, hope and pray that you can install their Windows drivers with NDISWrapper and that WINE will be able to detect them and use them.
Once you get into music production, WINE becomes a fuck.
It's not just installing, for example, Ableton Live, but to also interface your controllers and audio devices, too.
But, also, I don't see why you would even want to. If you use Bitwig, for example, you can take full advantage of Jackd on Linux and then access all of the LADSPA audio effects.

If I had a laptop for DJing I'd consider making it an offline machine so it didn't get updates and nothing would ever "break" from an update.
Dantec ago
Which distribution would you recommend?
I'm considering Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, and Solus.
Napierdalator ago
Serious DJing (and ant other live audio) is the only job I'd consider getting a macbook for.

That's used for show, at the end stage an iPod could be used for playback. When you realize they use actual audio equipment to make their music.

Also latency. Any abstraction layer is going to add unacceptable amounts of latency.
wakkablam ago
Uh, no. Wine is not emulation. It says so in the name.
Replacing A with B does not mean additional latency.

Thanks for the response, that clears things up for me.
Salbuchi_2019 ago
How do you find Jack as an audio stack, compared to CoreAudio or WASAPI?
sakuramboo ago
I can't compare them because I don't use Windows or OSX for production.
