'some moral laws may be designed to minimize human suffering and maximize human flourishing long term.'
Unwin examines the data from 86 societies and civilizations to see if there is a relationship between sexual freedom and the flourishing of cultures. What makes the book especially interesting is that we in the West underwent a sexual revolution in the late 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s and are now in a position to test the conclusions he arrived at more than 40 years earlier. '
'Increased sexual constraints, either pre or post-nuptial, always led to increased flourishing of a culture. Conversely, increased sexual freedom always led to the collapse of a culture three generations later. '
'Highest flourishing of culture: The most powerful combination was pre-nuptial chastity coupled with “absolute monogamy”. Rationalist cultures that retained this combination for at least three generations exceeded all other cultures in every area, including literature, art, science, furniture, architecture, engineering, and agriculture. Only three out of the eighty-six cultures studied ever attained this level.'
....to contrast,
'Effect of abandoning prenuptial chastity: When strict prenuptial chastity was no longer the norm, absolute monogamy, deism, and rational thinking also disappeared within three generations.
Total sexual freedom: If total sexual freedom was embraced by a culture, that culture collapsed within three generations to the lowest state of flourishing — which Unwin describes as “inert” and at a “dead level of conception” and is characterized by people who have little interest in much else other than their own wants and needs. At this level, the culture is usually conquered or taken over by another culture with greater social energy.

If something is banned in a religious book four thousand years old (the Old Testament) for almost all of that four thousand years, it's probably not a great idea, for the individual or for society, to disregard the ban and wallow in it.

The problem with that is when the reason for the ban is based on something superstitious and easily dismissed as bullshit, such as the existence of a magical cloud man who will be upset and send you to a lake of fire when you die if you don't obey.
Anyone without their head firmly lodged inside their ass knows there's no afterlife and that heaven & hell are metaphors, so the next logical step is "Oh, well they believed XYZ untrue and stupid shit, then this other stuff they believed is probably just backward and unenlightened as well." without realizing there's a valid reason the makers of the book were trying to scare people into compliance.
You can't use bullshit fairytales to push people into following rules- however necessary those rules are- because as soon as people figure out the fairytale is bullshit they abandon the rules that came with it.

My sis in law is an RN and occasionally witnesses the elderly pass away. Most of them die in a terrifying fashion. In their last minute their eyes wide open with terror in them and with their last breaths they mutter about demons coming for them to drag them into the inferno of hell. All except for the ones who are drugged up. Most RN's regard this as sensory malfunction and brush it aside.
You'll find out sooner or later, degenerates!

I've been clinically dead before, and am only alive because I've been resuscitated.
You'll see whatever you believe in, because those are the thoughts you're having. There's no metaphysical component involved. Your body is shutting down and you're either having terror-fueled hallucinations, or you're welcoming the embrace of nothingness.

Then most likely you weren't meant to die at that point

You literally believe in magic because old people freak out when they die.
You're beyond reason.
