Theyre not afraid, the riot police are not the municipal police in France. They are CRS its like a reserve unit corp for Police during emergencies or large scale events like for concerts and sports events. The actual police have been supportive and relatively lax with the yellow jacket protestors until the orders came down from mount Olympus to crush the protests, thats why it went from public protest and disruption to riots.
The riot police are afraid, the local police who actually try to protect communities didn't beat up ambulance workers attempting to treat the injured, they didn't shoot a woman in the face with a tear gas canister and kill her, they didn't brutally attack pensioners. The riot police did and they have no problem being jackboot thugs all day long because they are and always were larping as police. They are afraid because its not stopping and pretty soon they will be more than just antagonists to the protestors they will be traitors to the French people and are being specifically targeted, singled out, and fucked up by the protestors they have been attacking.
