It's not really probation, but you could look at it like that. Each province is different, but once you've graduated with your BEd and get hired by a school district, you have to be a ToC (teacher on call, which is a substitute teacher) for a certain number of hours, and then the district has to give you a contract and then you can bid on a position (have your own class).

You have all the rights and protections in the union. It's mostly just a question of positions to fill. The only difference is they don't owe you a certain number of hours.
