I seem to recall learning the history of the Theater in grade school (it was a really good school). Something about how traveling groups of actors (no women allowed), would cross the hills and dales performing their plays. They of course supplemented their incomes by prostituting themselves and the young boys (acted out the female roles) who traveled with them, to the rich and powerful men in the towns and cities they 'performed' in.
Nothing has changed, except now they sell women and girls, as well.
