The hyoid bone fracture is a very rare fracture of the hyoid bone, accounting for 0.002% of all fractures in humans. It is commonly associated with strangulation and rarely occurs in isolation. The fracture may be associated with gunshot injury, car accidents, or induced vomiting. In 50% of strangulations and 27% of hangings, hyoid fractures occur.

The whole thing is ludicrous. It was barely a 3 foot drop covered by impediments like the mattress sticking out etc that requires you to somehow subvert your involuntary survival instincts completely for it to come close to doing anything. Even with his legs cut off I don't see this doing much.

As ludicrous as it seems, when someone wants to finish it, they will. My sister killed herself by hanging herself from her bedroom door knob with a tie. The question I kept asking myself is: Why didn't she just stand up? And the only answer I have is that whatever demons she was dealing with were powerful enough to not let her save herself.
Do I think Epstein killed himself? Absolutely not. But it is feasible to do it that way... although your neck won't be broke at all. Just sayin'.
