I wish. I've tried to learn guitar, but I don't have much of a knack for it. Pisses me off, because my daughter is an amazing pianist, violinist and just started playing viola.
The secret is starting on a nylon stringed guitar, otherwise known as a classical guitar, and learning simple songs like, The Carter Family - Keep on the sunny side - YouTube. Block out the other sounds, and practice alone with the chords/lyrics written neatly and large, on a piece of paper after listening.. Easytab was my best friend in advancing. The Standells - Dirty Water - YouTube. Three chords in most rock and other. 3 chords. Yes, I, like most others, tried to play stairway to heaven, or Jimi Hendrix right away, and that actually retarded my progress looking back. Smoke on the water is a great way to learn bass and guitar.
Good advice. I've started a few times. A year of electric guitar after college in the 90s. Then a few years ago I did three years of Classical guitar (Suzuki Method). I got all the way through book 6 and could play okay. But I still don't have a knack for it. Musically, I'm a retard. Alas.
I am not a huge Neil Young fan because he is such a whiner, and I agree with Skynard, but he did make some good songs that have really simple chord structures. So simple, that they helped me play and sing at the same time, which is a huge hurdle even for much more accomplished guitarists than me. Don't start with Willie, the songs sound simple and slow, but I was so surprised at the rare chords and unusual complexity. In other words, he makes it look easy.
