This joke was told in 2008 at the annual Al Smith dinner where presidential candidates (Hillary Clinton) and Barack Obama and John McCain were in attendance, along with Chuck Schumer and Michael Bloomberg. Evidently this Catholic Charity annual fundraiser is for: "The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, commonly known as the Al Smith Dinner, is an annual white tie dinner in New York City, United States, for fundraising of Catholic charities supporting "the neediest children of the Archdiocese of New York, regardless of race, creed, or color."[1] Held at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on the third Thursday of October, it is hosted by the Archbishop of New York while organized by the Alfred E. Looks like the Astor family is involved (English branch is in Pilgrim Society). Dinner held at the Waldorf-Astoria, built by the Astors.

Actually, it's the other way around. The Astor family, who built the Waldorf Astoria Hotel where the dinner takes place (and receives funding for its Astor Charities), is also of German jewish descent.
