UPDATE - There seems to be some questions about whether you have to own the domain to create sub domains. I found this for you all to peruse, and interpret:

Pranksters can add these subdomains through other DNS services. I'm not sure of the technical details, but I've seen this sort of thing before.

The subdomains were called out here about a week or so ago.
