Anyone who was sexually abused as a kid and said something about it as an adult (or is close to someone who's gone through that) knows that this is the most common tactic of the abuser, whether it's a parent, uncle, clergy, teacher, etc. — and those around abusers tend to consciously choose to enable it simply because of the disruption to their comfort telling the truth might require.

Sadly true, and perhaps even more true when the abused child doesn't wait to become an adult but speaks up at the time of the abuse.
