They do have Khazar ancestry, but fake "Jews" like Koestler blow this fact out of proportion. They have plenty of Near Eastern ancestry, too, which is evident from their appearance and genetics, but this ancestry is mostly Canaanite in origin, Edomite, in particular. Sure, there is surely a dash of real Israelite blood, but mostly it's other stuff. People like Koestler create this illusion that there are real Jews and fake ones when in reality all those who call themselves Jews today are fakes.
It's actually funny that the fake "Jews" will cite their genetic similarity to modern-day Palestinians as proof of their genuine Jewishness. They'll say: "Hey look, we're no Khazars, we're genuine Near Easterners, like the Palestinians". The problem is, Palestinians descend from Canaanites whereas the Bible constantly reminds its readers that the Israelites were not Canaanites and that they came from outside of that region, in my estimation, around Armenia/Southern Turkey. So why would genuine descendants of the Israelites, as the fake "Jews" today call themselves, bear such genetic similarity to the Palestinians? Does this not mean that both populations in question descend from Canaanites? Indeed it does.
Unsurprisingly the Israelis have never done genetic testing on the remains of ancient Israelites, or if they have, they have not publicized them. I wonder why... Now, of course the Israeli government could also fake results, but I doubt this would be very easy because there is such a large international community interested in the Israelites and all things biblical, so I am guessing that forging genetic results would be difficult, fortunately enough.

T.J. Miller - Jew
Dana Schwarz - Jew
