India's citizens are using WhatsApp to warn everyone about kidnappers and sexual predators and the government is not happy and believes the "rumors" are dangerous because they have led to several lynchings.
WhatsApp said Wednesday it was "horrified" by a spate of lynchings in India sparked by false rumours shared on its platform as the government accused the messaging service of irresponsibility.
More than 20 people have been killed in India in the last two months, according to media reports, after rumours were spread on smartphones about child kidnappers, thieves and sexual predators.
A stern statement issued by the electronics and IT ministry late on Tuesday expressed the government's "deep disapproval" to the senior management of WhatsApp over the "irresponsible and explosive messages".
"The government has also conveyed in no uncertain terms that WhatsApp must take immediate action to end this menace," it added.
In a letter to the Indian government, WhatsApp said it "cares deeply about people's safety" and had taken steps to combat the scourge of fake news and hoaxes.
The company said it was working with Indian researchers to better understand the problem and had introduced changes it said would reduce the spread of unwanted messages.
Rumours on WhatsApp about child kidnappers saw eight men killed in eastern Indian last year but the same information has since resurfaced.
It seems the government even employed someone to act as a Snopes-like character to dispel the "rumors", and this didn't go over too well with the citizens.
Last week a "rumour buster" official tasked with warning the public against such hoaxes was killed in northeastern Tripura.
WhatsApp said it planned to run a public safety campaign in India "given its importance" to the company, and mentioned efforts by police to use its platform to raise awareness about its misuse.
"We believe that false news, misinformation and the spread of hoaxes are issues best tackled collectively: by government, civil society and technology companies working together," WhatsApp said.
"With the right action we can help improve everyone's safety."

OK, I hope everyone now understands that there are absolutely NO kidnappers or sexual predators in India, and anyone stating otherwise does not care about you or your family's safety. Only the government, WhatsApp, and Facebook care about you and your loved ones, and would of course alert you should they discover that children are being raped and/or kidnapped.
India is the safest place on Earth for children.
Oh, wait...
The records show that while in 2015, 10,854 cases of rape under Section 376 of the IPC and under Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were registered pan-India, 2016 saw 19,765 of such cases being registered. https://www.thequint.com/voices/opinion/minor-rapes-in-india-data

Oops! It actually looks like the Indian government, WhatsApp, and Facebook are actually more worried about protecting child sexual predators than children.

It is, but it's nice to see that people are starting to fight back by using social media to their advantage to get the word out, and I'll admit it made me smile to see that the Snopes-like government shill was quickly identified and eliminated preventing him from doing any further damage.

after I did that report on Mexico, saw Cartel Land
towns going up against the Knights Cartel and even the Mexican Government
damn, I am so proud of those people

Good people - the best!

think I read somewhere, one older guy had a metal bowl or pot stuffed with newspaper to use as a helmet
they stole there guns, ammo, vehicles, everything from the Knights and built themselves an army
Obama and his Fast and Furious, made Cartel Mexico what it is today

Proud to have such innovative people there to fight the chaos Obama and his goons caused.

Wow! I just saw on Instagram that all animals in India now have individual rights. This is a huge step, and may pave the way for even stiffer sentences for people who harm children. To be technical about it, the Uttarakhand HIgh Court has granted the status of "legal person or entity" to all animals, including avian and aquatic.

Are not cows better protected then their children
I heard they walk the streets unharmed

Yes, but that's for religious beliefs. This law states that all beings are sentient. New Zealand and parts of Canada and Spain have also drawn up such laws.

they don't have laws for raping and killing children, how are those laws working for them?
Laws are nothing unless followed by all, IMO
loopholes are capitalized all the time
what exactly is happening in big numbers that they need to do this?
smh, maybe I don't want to know

In my opinion from what I've seen, evil people are hiding among those who care about animals very deeply because they know that some of these people are easy to exploit because they're very empathetic. The thing is though, many of these people who are outspoken about animal rights are extremely liberal and this is where the laws will work in favor of both spectrums because most of the sickos who abuse children are also abusing animals, so this is an excellent way to weed them out and start to get Justice to work the way it should've been all along. I may be wrong about this, but to me, the tide seems to be turning. Just look at how vigilante justice and now animal rights are becoming prevalent in this society. I've believed for a long time that the true age old war has always been about the battle between the empaths and the sociopaths, and now we're seeing the empaths starting to fight back with a vengeance. Seeing as this is going on in India, I have to wonder if it's going on worldwide, but the media is blacking it out.

I get it
remember Trayvon Martin Story, I was making comments at Huff, without knowing how liberal they were lol
Liberals do want to save everything, thats how so much tax money got ripped off
funny how they turn and twist

Haha, exactly!
