In one of his articles that he wrote for Columbia Spectator titled "When love is a chatch-22" http://archive.is/NlJbP he writes about telling his parents:

We thought we could handle anything my past could throw at us, that we were writing a love story whose end had already been determined: I was going to get well. I would stop trying to commit suicide, start playing the piano again, and finally tell my parents about what had happened to me as a child. I would pursue a job in human rights, transfer to Columbia—things would matter to me again. Defiance! Redemption! Transformation!

He had seen my scars and still told me I looked beautiful, what was more proof than that?

What happened to him as a child. Would that be before he was adopted? He also writes about seeing therapists for a number of years. So how could his parents not know?

He also writes about his scars. Elsewhere he wrote about being cut on his thighs. Again, his parents would be aware.

The huge smile on his photos camouflage the deadness in his eyes to some extent. But I find it difficult to believe that parents bringing him up would not know that something is wrong.

His father making that 'anal' joke on a street sign when the child has been traumatised earlier in life is inappropriate and does not make sense either. His mother who volunteers for an organisation that deals with traumatised children indicates that they were not oblivious to his troubled past.

So, what I'm saying is that the parents may not have been responsible for any abuse but they must have been aware. He wrote consistently about it too. So more mature people (forget his half wit millenial friends) would/should have been alerted to his fragile state of mind. Very strange case.

Parents can make a difference in a child's life. Did he feel as if they were powerless to help him. They did not feel strong enough to help HIM but they could help others? This is like the plumber who's sink is never fixed. Always too busy to help others and their own kids fall through the cracks. Yes, something was seriously wrong with this family. Totally dysfunctional.
