I live in a sort of isolated town of 11000 people (about 5 yrs now). My wife would love to join a church and I would be fully on board for the community service aspects (our town used to be a mining owned town so older people's mindsets are one of "it could just be closed down any minute, why have any pride in our community?" even though this isn't the case anymore). Unfortunately anyone I speak to of religion (we only really have Christianity here) turn out to be morons frankly. Can anyone help me with suggestions to "tolerate" the "praying solves my problems/Jesus take the wheel" and "Trump should protect Israel cuz muh Byeble says so" people if I can find a church that does good works?

You can just try swallow your frustration and participate in what is good. I did that for years, but I had been a serious and dedicated Christian before that. I can't do it anymore so I just deflect the questions about what church do you go to as best I can. Not really morons, brain washed is more like it. Lot of good in the churches, lot of bad. I stopped believing because if a powerful god exists he must choose to not intervene and that makes him evil. Supposedly that is the price we pay for the immense gift of free will but of course as good parents we do intervene with our kids and limit their free will. As citizens we intervene with free will by putting people in prison. God could do that too. Since he doesn't, the rape of little children falls at his feet. Its easier to not believe in god than to face the fact that a powerful god cannot be good. Lots of theologians make their income twisting words and thoughts to explain the unexplained. People want so much for there to be a good god that they don't use their brains to see the inconsistencies. I did that for years. Free at last
