Williams brushed shoulders with the rich and powerful

Williams was named Horseman of the Year in 1960 by the American Horse Shows Assn. and in 1977 by the California Professional Horsemen's Assn. In 1989 he became the first recipient of the American Horse Shows Assn.'s Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Tiffany-designed trophy, a sterling silver cowboy hat, was named for him.

From a 1986 article on Williams:

"The soft-spoken, 69-year-old, white-haired manager of the riding club, dines with movie stars, cusses like a cowboy and has ridden with Ronald Reagan."

three California governors presenting awards to Williams. He has a wall unit crammed with tarnished silver bowls, trays, cups and chafing dishes

"Williams' philosophy with horses is much the same as it is with people. He says one can never teach a horse anything with force and they must be taught to jump, not scared into it. "

Too bad he didn't apply his horse philosophy to his female students. http://articles.latimes.com/1986-07-18/news/vw-16753_1_jimmy-williams/2
