This Rosanne thing was always a proxy for Pres Trump. They brought the show back so they could inevitably cancel the show when she said something they didn’t like. They can’t beat Trump so this is a symbolic show of force. Rosanne was always going to end this way.

Look, I'm not going to lie and say that I'm unaware of the historical background of referring to members of a certain community to primates.
However, I've always thought of Planet of the Apes as a political commentary. It's making a point of a particular type of politician/political party. If we take the characteristics as articulated in the movie, it closely aligns with her political views/stances.
But Roseanne should have held back on saying it. And, no, it doesn't make us all look bad. Stop being a apologist. If the left can continually print lies, distortions, heckle a mother sharing a pic of her child, we don't have anything to be ashamed about.
