SPOKANE, Wash. - Child rape suspect and Veterans Affairs Hospital physician Craig Morgenstern volunteers for the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program, the organization confirmed to KHQ's Gabe Cohen on Friday.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters CEO Darin Christensen said Morgenstern stopped volunteering in March 2013, and only mentored 1 child during his time with the company. Christensen said they have talked with authorities since Morgenstern's arrest on Child Rape and Possession of Child Pornography charges.
Christensen also confirmed the child Morgenstern mentored is not the child the suspected rape a week ago.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters Darin Christensen CEO released the following statement on Friday:
I want to confirm that Dr. Craig Morgenstern was a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest program. Dr. Morgenstern was only ever matched to one child during his connection with Big Brothers Big Sisters. His mentoring match ended in March of 2013.
We contacted Stevens County law enforcement, per their community wide request, Wednesday evening in immediate response to the allegations regarding Dr. Morgenstern. We are actively working with law enforcement and providing information as it is specifically required. Because of the ongoing investigation we defer to law enforcement for specifics related to these allegations.
We are deeply saddened by the allegations and want to express our wishes of support to the young man, his family and any others who may have been effected [sic] by this.

Morgenstern was taken into custody by Federal agents Thursday night as he was attempting to post bond at the Stevens County Jail. On Thursday, Morgenstern was in court after being arrested Wednesday night when detectives found child pornography in his home.
Morgenstern was initially arrested by the Stevens County Sheriff's Office on Monday after detectives spent the weekend investigating the claim that he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old boy at his home Friday night. After compiling evidence, Morgenstern was arrested Monday and charged with Second Degree Rape of a Child. He posted his $100,000 bond set by the judge and returned home. Following an additional search of his home by detectives, he was arrested on the charge of Possession of Child Pornography on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Morgenstern faced a Stevens County judge again, who set his bail at $250,000 for the Possession of Child Pornography charge. Later that day, as Morgenstern was attempting to post bail at the Stevens County Jail, Federal Agents came and took him into custody on a US Marshals hold. He was then taken to the Spokane County Jail.
