You are correct. They do not truly believe in anything supernatural. They do not believe in God or Demons. They try to convince us and their underlings that the supernatural is real. You can still believe in god though to use your Santa Clause analogy. It helps kids be naughty or nice to a certain degree(a moral framework) and it's nice for kids to believe in magic but you grow up and you learn adults have no idea what's going on. Kill the boy let the man be born, humans even our own dark or lazy impulses need to be controlled, some need magic to have a good life.
