They had him killed because he's probably named names. Salling was said to be a violent rapist and abuser from way back. I think RedditRefugee is right: with main witness dead, there can be no prosecution.

Even if Salling wouldn't named names now, he may have started once he was incarcerated -- that's when they should have had him offed. So, it may strengthen the argument he was about to name names, so their hands were forced.
