The US gov is the world's largest corporation and investor. It is also the wealthiest and most tangible asset rich entity in the world. CBS was founded as a branch of the US gov. So were Time and LIFE magazines.
When I was researching the media, I perused hundreds of radio industry rags published from the '20s -' 50s time frame. EVERY issue from around 1930 onward had at least one article on the development of TV. Clearly the radio industry was threatened by the possibilities of a visual version of their business. You could say they were speaking the unfiltered truth as they huddled in concern.
At the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin, Germany displayed their brand new television technology to the world, although actual TVs to receive their broadcast were only available in Germany. I remember reading a fascinating article published in 1947 in which the author expressed amazement at all of the wonders and hi tech the US had appropriated from Germany (spoils of War) ; egg sterilization techniques, farming and livestock techniques, computer circuitry, metals production, optics, etc and so on.
Ever ask yourself why they have the Academy Awards each year and why it's akin to a royal spectacle? Because the film and TV industries are America's most precious resource. What, you didn't like the movie ET? Sure, child labor laws had to be rewritten but it was our sacred duty.
Over the years the gov slowly cut the free press out of their fair share of the media spectrum, the free press being ME and YOU and our fair share being 100%!
