Are you sure it's not an allegory, or possibly a reference to the reptile brain where fear and narcissism manifest versus the limbic system (mammalian brain) where care and compassion manifest? The neuroscience explanation seems more plausible. On the other hand I'm open to evidence. And finally, it doesn't really matter if the perpetrators are human or not—we still need to usher in the new enlightenment to stop vampires.
