Don't believe what they said to you when you were young. Not everyone knows or is in on the horror you grew up in. There are tons of nice, virtuous people who can and are genuinely trying to help shed light on this issue.

Please tell your stories so that we can all get a clearer picture of what's going on. There are plenty of other kids living the same terror we know so well. It's NOT just us.
