I am a cult government program survivor and victim of child rape inside of that. One thing which I know, and please understand I can only speak from my own experience, is that symbolism and ritual is very much a part of the mind control process. If they can make us believe that entities, especially ones from history, still hold power today, that is a part of the fear mind control processing.
