It's very hard to lean one way or the other, it's entirely possible that the two deaths are linked simply by heartbreak and, well, Carrie makes no attempt to hide the involvement of drugs in her life...
In the interview (https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2006/11/wayne_carriefisher200611)), she speaks of the drug-induced death of a friend in her bed - doctors essentially concluded that the deceased's body was so worn out from a life-time of drug use, that it simply shut down - if not on that night, any other given day/night in the near future.
EDIT: I am no medical professional, if anything I say after this line is inaccurate, please correct me.
This is, essentially, akin to death by natural causes, except the drugs, over time, caused an 'acceleration' of said process which leads to an 'early' cessation of vital bodily functions. The autonomous functions(heartbeat, breathing, etc) are unable to execute due to the CNS(Central Nervous System) being pretty much tapped out/fried.
It is also worth noting that opiates themselves, at sufficient doses, can severely hinder autonomous lung function - even cause it to cease entirely; death is a very real risk with some of the drugs Carrie was known to take.
Suppose this 'natural' death(sleep apnoea - if i recall correctly - is when you lose the ability to breathe efficiently while sleeping; relates to snoring and etc, someone please correct me if I'm wrong), was enough to break the heart and will of Carrie's mother?
They were pretty damn close if I recall correctly, again.
