In all actuality, fag comes (probably) from faggot, which originally meant a bundle of wood, where indeed, that bundle of wood was set afire, to burn at the stake, both protestant and RCatholic "heretics." It happened a lot in Scotland, they were called Covenanted marytrs. I've been to these places. It's horrible.
Also, if you visit the Netherlands, it is polite to smoke a cig, in some circles, even if you're not a regular smoker. Just like the Scots will give you whiskey.
