When I read this article it struck me as very odd that a tip for a child porn bust came from NCMEC. Why would someone call them instead of the authorities? How are they getting their information?

An Elk Grove Village man faces child pornography charges after police received a tip from a national organization dedicated to finding missing children.
Oren Richard Knez III, 19, of the 1300 block of Parker Place, was arrested July 20 after police executed a search warrant of his house, Deputy Chief Nick Olsen said. Knez was charged with possession of child pornography with intent to disseminate -- a Class X felony -- and possession of child pornography.
The investigation started when the police department got a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. During the investigation, detectives determined images of child pornography had been downloaded off the internet at Knez's residence.
This is just one example of the problems with NCMEC which are well documented in the earlier post https://voat.co/v/pizzagate/1723445 by @TamalepantsMD .
Because they are a private organization they are exempt from any government oversight, including FOIA and donors names, even though they were established by congress and receive some taxpayers money.
Here is another good read on NCMEC

@Commoner: I'm confused about why it's a problem NCMEC tipped off local authorities? I have grave concerns about NCMEC -- especially their lack of oversight -- but aren't they supposed to be a national clearinghouse that local agencies report busts and tips to and send videos and photos of kids to so that networks across state and national borders can be unraveled and kids rescued? Isn't his their mandate?

I deleted the post because it was getting weird.
I agree with you in that it is confusing.
Yes, they are, and THAT is the problem. According to their website:
So, you have to ask yourself? If the authorities can run a national database for stolen cars, guns, and HORSES, why can't they do one for kids? Why is a PRIVATE company allowed to do something illegal....... have access to child porn? Even worse, have access to child porn with absolutely no oversight and no transparency? Who are their donors?
We don't have any idea who they are working for? They 'help' bust a lone pedophile, but yet, as Trump just spoke of yesterday, human trafficking is worse than it has probably ever been in history.
Who are NCMEC and what are they really doing?
This is just an example of the whole problem with them.
