Have you read Liddy's "Will"? I admire his father's intelligence, but he's not completely sane either. He's also not completely forthright in his culpability within Watergate, and his admiration of Oliver North (who he must see as simpatico to himself) is stomach churning.
Since we are in the PG section, one does have to question what knowledge, or participation, the elder Liddy may have had within the intelligence circles he was involved with.
If you mean they are imitating behaviour that was performed upon them, not necessarily. Rapists haven't all been raped, or witnessed rape. It basically all comes down to control in either case.
An adult, being an adult, is automatically placed into a commensurate position of authority and assumed power. There is no threat to ego. The other aspect would be transgressing societal norms into forbidden territory, or thrill seeking. Now, taking that into consideration you can see where someone who felt powerless, and felt their sexuality was something "dirty" would be attracted to such a relationship, even if just in fantasy. I'll remind you, so far no evidence has been shown that he was a perpetrator.
It is possible Raymond found his father somewhat overbearing, or that he felt he was unable to meet his expectations. I knew someone who was quite successful, but apparently was taping footage of friends of his daughter. His wife and he divorced and his new girlfriend found the tapes and turned them over to police. I doubt he was ever a victim of abuse, but I'll be damned if I can imagine traveling down that road into degeneracy. I was taught to value and guard my integrity, as I've taught my children. Simply, you are what you do. One who bakes is a baker, one who works on cars is a mechanic, but one to willingly descends into degeneracy is a degenerate.
If I had known Liddy personally, my opinion formed wouldn't change. I make people I know demonstrate their faults to me before downgrading them.
I agree, and those are all salient points. And do occur in reality. Hopefully, this is the case. I've met the man on a couple of occasions, as well as photos with him. I'd like nothing more then to believe your right.
I remember there was a part in the book where he talks about a big reason why he chose the woman he married is that he wanted someone with "good stock" to give him children. I interpreted that as white and German/Aryan. Kinda ironic now.
Healthy of body does not equate to that of the mind/spirit. However, there must be something to the mind affecting the body, as so many pedophiles have that weird upper-lip thing going on.
It's worth noting though that Liddy has four other children who've managed to stay out of the newspapers. Pedophilia is a catastrophic failure in one's integrity and difficult to imagine just how it comes into being. It works against societal norms, and counters integral familial instinct. In the same way, it's difficult to see how anyone could ever recover, once they've transgressed those lines.
