How do journalists determine the validity or reliability of a story? In the old days (before NYT and WAPO) a story would need multiple verifiable sources before it went to print. While we do not have the resources of most journalist we do have the internet and pretty easy to get a 2 or 3 sources agreement on news. That is what I do, multiple sources...if I think it might be lead, might pursue, but would not consider it beginning to be factual until multiple source confirmation...
Yeah, that's the problem... A lot of them don't even need to determine the validity/reliability of a story anymore (not really), and they wonder why people don't trust them. They assume a story is true or not without proper research, they just write a copy/paste of other media' articles (or directly from the AFP), etc...
If we take the example of pizzagate, a lot of "journalists" probably are only ignorant, the others must be knowing the truth but still choose to lie for some reason. (pressure, fear, blackmailed, have interests in the story or relatives involved in it...?!)
I hope true journalism will rise from the ashes some day... :/
