I lived in Chiang Rai province near Mae Hong San province, and yes that is a HUGE trafficking/drug area. When conducting research about the area, I found an article saying that a lot of the gangs that traffic girls are tied to "wealthy backers overseas"

People will explain away anything. Like when I point out to people that the rapper Drake uses an Owl logo that's almost identical to the Bohemian Club. But people still say "it means nothing" or "its not EXACTLY the same, its just a coincidence." People just don't want to accept this stuff.
I think you're right. I think most people have an idea that it is happening....they just don't want to believe that nobody is on their side. It's a willful ignorance.
