I remember hubbub about this at the time. I took it more as harkening back to when kids could go places unaccompanied to play and do kid things. That being said, one story I read was about a mother letting her 9 yro ride the subway in NYC unaccompanied. That one seemed much too dangerous to me. Things are definitely different these days.

As a 40yo male who works out and studies krav maga: I'm scared to ride on a NYC subway. They have the lowest of the low and a ton of career criminals.
