I dont see many people mentioned what utilities, software, and background check services they use to research the names involved and the relationships that make up the whole dynamic.

Mind Mapping software is excellent for putting relationships and kinships in perspective. Used with services such as Intelius or PeopleLooker, makes for some good insights.
